WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE DEEP NECK LIFT PROCEDURE?
Your surgery is performed by Dr. Chaowen Wu in a state-of-the-art surgical center. A neck lift is an outpatient procedure. During the procedure, Dr. Wu makes a small incision underneath the chin and horizontal incisions behind the ears (if necessary). After making the necessary incisions, the surgeon tightens the vertical neck muscles and removes excess skin and fat tissues. After making the desired adjustments, the incisions are closed with sutures.
WHAT KIND OF ANESTHESIA IS USED DURING A DEEP NECK LIFT?

Dr. Wu can perform all facial rejuvenation procedures either using general anesthesia or local anesthesia. A neck lift is once of several procedures that can be safely and effectively performed under local anesthesia.

HOW IS A DEEP NECK LIFT DONE UNDER LOCAL ANESTHESIA
Dr. Wu will prescribe an oral anti-anxiety medication for you to take the morning of surgery should you feel nervous. Once you begin experiencing the calming effect, your neck skin will be numbed using local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. After your skin is numb you will not feel any pain. In fact, most patients fall asleep during the procedure as it can be quite a pleasant and relaxing experience.

WHEN IS NECK LIPOSUCTION USED DURING A DEEP NECK LIFT?
Dr. Wu’s preferred method of neck contouring is a deep plane neck lift which involves directly reshaping your neck fat and tissues during surgery by removing the fat under vision. This is less traumatic compared to liposuction and can create a more reliable contour because a deep neck lift addresses the fat pads both above and below the platysma neck muscle. Therefore, Dr. Wu is unlikely to recommend neck liposuction. If neck liposuction is recommended, it involves inserting a small tube-like device called a cannula underneath the chin via a small incision. The cannula suctions away the unwanted fat cells. Dr. Wu will examine your neck to determine if neck liposuction is recommended rather than deep neck contouring.
WHAT’S THE DEEP NECK LIFT RECOVERY LIKE?
You’ll need to wear bandages for up to 24 hours after the surgery and keep your head elevated during this time. The next day, Dr. Wu will remove the bandages and examine your neck to ensure you are healing well. You will then be provided with a removable chin wrap to support your neck during recover. You will wear this neck support every day for 2 weeks.
You can reduce post-operative discomfort with oral medications, but the post-treatment swelling and bruising may persist for 2 weeks. You can resume light activities in 5 to 7 days, but you should avoid strenuous workouts for 4-6 weeks. Dr. Wu will provide an overview of your recovery guidelines to ensure optimal recovery and wound healing.
