What is a facelift?

As we grow older, our facial features undergo numerous transformations due to the loss of elasticity and collagen. The loss of elasticity leads to skin laxity and sagging, which, in turn, leads to wrinkles, creases, and nasolabial folds. You may also experience the loss of volume in your cheeks and under-eye regions, making you look gaunt and tired.

A facelift is a surgical procedure that lifts and tightens the facial tissues and removes excess skin and fat tissues. The procedure is generally focused on the lower two-thirds of the face, including the neck. Instead of changing your facial appearance, a facelift reverses the signs of aging on your face, thus reintroducing you to your younger self. A facelift can make you look up to 10 years younger.

You’re a good candidate for a facelift if you…

  • Are in generally good physical and mental health.
  • Don’t have underlying medical conditions that prevent optimal wound healing or recovery.
  • Don’t smoke or are willing to stop smoking several months before and after the surgery.
  • Have realistic expectations from the facelift surgery.
  • Have visibly sagging skin, jowls, and deep wrinkles and creases.

Dr. Chaowen Wu incorporates highly personalized surgical techniques to address your specific facial concerns, helping you achieve natural-looking results. During your consultation, Dr. Wu will carefully examine your face, discuss your goals, and review your medical history to determine if you’re a suitable candidate for a facelift in The Woodlands, TX.

What happens during the facelift procedure?

The specific details of your facelift procedure will depend on your unique goals and requirements. Dr. Wu curates a personalized treatment plan just for you — she’ll provide a complete overview of your surgery after your consultation.

The location of the incisions also depends on your specific goals. In a traditional facelift, the incision starts in the hairline at the temples, reaches around the ears, and extends to the lower scalp. Another incision might be placed under the chin, especially if you have severe signs of aging on your chin or neck. In some cases, patients with minimal signs of aging may only require incisions around the ears.

After making the necessary incisions, the surgeon will remove excess skin and fat tissues. The underlying muscles will also be strengthened or redistributed. Finally, the skin tissues will be redraped in place using dissolvable sutures or skin glue. Depending on your specific surgery, you may also need a surgical drainage tube after the surgery to prevent fluid accumulation under your skin.

Why is fat grafting an important part of a facelift?

In recent years, fat grafting has increasingly become an essential component of a successful facelift. Traditional facelifts tighten your skin tissues and remove unwanted pockets of fat from under your chin and other regions. However, traditional facelift techniques don’t address one of the other signs of aging — the loss of facial volume from the cheeks, temples, and under-eye regions. And that’s where fat grafting becomes important.

Fat grafting is a surgical technique wherein fat tissues are harvested from one part of your body and grafted into another. Excess fat tissues might be drawn from your abdomen and placed into targeted areas of your face. This gives you an instant lift, making your cheeks look fuller and more youthful, thereby reversing the effects of age. In Dr. Wu’s experienced hands, a facelift with fat grafting looks completely natural.

Dr. Wu will discuss your fat grafting options and explore the potential sites of grafting during your consultation.

What’s the post-facelift healing process like?

Most patients have to wear dressings around the head, not the neck, for the first 24 hours after the surgery. Drainage tubes might be necessary in some cases to prevent fluid accumulation under the skin. You can minimize discomfort and pain using oral medications. The surgical sutures will be removed after 1 week, and the subsequent bruising and swelling will gradually dissipate within 2 to 4 weeks.

Dr. Wu will provide a comprehensive list of post-surgery recovery guidelines to ensure a smooth and safe recovery process.
